“V” Is for Victory

I, Mahesh, love to go goose hunting. In studying the habits of these amazing creatures, I have learned another important lesson about the last days’ battle between spiritual kingdoms. By instinct geese fly the squadron formation of a V. That pattern is the secret to their ability to travel across whole continents when they are on the move.

Scientists have long theorized as to why geese and other large migratory birds adopt this formation. A certain team of scientists found at least one answer: By taping heart monitors to pelicans that were trained to fly behind a small airplane, they proved that it actually makes for more efficient flying. The heart rates of the birds flying in a V were lower than when flying solo. The birds used less energy and burned less body fuel when traveling as a company than when flying alone. They could glide more often in formation, and faced less air resistance.

In addition, in a V formation each bird has an unobstructed field of vision, allowing flock members to communicate while in flight. Jet fighter pilots use this formation for the same reason. The goose at the head of the V is not necessarily the leader of the flock; the geese take turns leading. As one bird tires it drops back and another takes its place.

A flock of geese can fly 70 percent farther by adopting the V shape! Now that is what we call teamwork.

This is a good illustration of the importance of moving together in the power of the Holy Spirit. As we let God group us into spiritual families, we will be more effective overcomers than we might be on our own. The faith of each believer added to a team of others will give us the same kind of advantage the V formation gives birds in flight.

There is an exciting war story about a group of prisoners that also illustrates the power of teamwork. These men overcame their captivity together through patience and persistence.

During World War II, 76 Allied soldiers escaped from a high-security Nazi prison camp before their tunnel was discovered. It became known as the “Great Escape.” Six hundred men worked around the clock for more than a year to accomplish their mission. They engineered and dug an elaborate set of tunnels. The dirt was extracted by teaspoonfuls and ferried out of the tunnels onto the camp yard through pockets sewn into the men’s prison uniforms. They secured and constructed lighting in the tunnels and built a special bellows to force fresh air in for those who were digging the shafts.

The prisoners even created “escape suits” so they would not be seen in prison garb once they were outside the prison camp. Men who were talented in handwriting, languages and printing were put to work forging identification and travel documents for the escapees. They worked in shifts in order to maintain the appearance of “life as usual” in the prison camp.
